Walk through the National Park with a ranger

Accompany a ranger on an inspection and observation tour. On paths and trails you will get to know various parts of the National Park and learn a lot about nature and culture, its origins and development. Listen to stories about the National Park or simply let nature work its magic on you.

During the months of May to October, the tours start at the meeting points mentioned above. You will find parking facilities here, but no other service facilities. Participation is free of charge, booking or registration is not possible. Weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes are basic requirements for participation.

All important information about the ranger and adventure tours can be found here

Borderline Tour

An exciting borderline tour between use and protection, between coppice and high forest, young trees and decay, coniferous and deciduous forest, moor and rock...between pros and cons! The perfect tour for athletic forest enthusiasts. A debate is highly encouraged! Please bring drinking cups for a refreshing sip from the Sauerbrunnen.

Wednesdays 10:30 am(1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Sauerbrunnen, duration 2.5-3 hours, moderately steep sections, partly on paths

Island Tour

The small settlement areas interspersed in large forest areas with their surrounding meadows and pastures are commonly referred to as clearing "islands". The nature of these clearings, the history of their villages and the stories about the people who lived there are the theme of this hike, which is also accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

Tuesdays 10:30 am (1 May to 31 October),
Ranger Meeting Point Thranenweier, duration: 1-2 hours, mainly flat section

Rock Tour

The Witches' Dance Grounds at the Wildenburg Castle, the quartzite ridges of the Mörschieder Burr or the quartzite scree on the slopes of the Idarbach might be among your destinations in the eastern tip of the National Park. The tour needs to be well planned, to ensure some time and energy for a visit to the wild animal reserve with the wild cat centre or perhaps just for a leisurely coffee at the foot of the castle tower.

Sundays 10:30 am (1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Wildenburg Castle, duration 2.5-3 hours, partly steep sections, mainly on paths

Summit Tour

From the Erbeskopf summit to the Gottlob and Springenkopf natural forest reserve. Here is already revealed what large areas of the National Park will look like someday. Past the Langbruch, a typical hillside moor, the trail leads to the National Park’s highest point with a magnificent view from the viewing platform „Windklang“. A relatively leisurely hike to the hot spots of nature conservation.

Fridays 2:30 pm (1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Erbeskopf, duration 2.5-3 hours, moderately steep sections, partly on paths

Forest Tour

A contemplative encounter with the forest in the quiet west of the National Park. This hike is not about spectacular rocks and moors but rather draws attention to the small, precious and important “pearls“ of the National Park. “Pure nature“ is the name of the game on this tour!

Thursdays 10:30 am (1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Muhl, duration 2.5-3 hours, some steep sections, partly on paths

Ring Tour

You should be sure-footed when you set out to explore the network of paths and trails along the so-called “Hun Ring“. The imposing remains of a ring wall from Celtic times and the rock formations around it have always defied forestry intervention, deadwood – full of life – consequently characterises the scene. The culture tour - steeply uphill over hill and dale.

Saturdays 10:30 am (1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Celtic Village, duration 2.5-3 hours, partly steep sections, mainly on paths

Junior Tour

Evolution of a national park: Easy as pie! At least on this short, child-friendly hike, the participants playfully approach the national park theme. The obligatory question “Will we see animals?“ can, for once, be answered with “Yes“: Afterwards, in the adjacent wildlife enclosure!

Sundays 10:30 am (1 May to 31 October)
Ranger Meeting Point Wildenburg Castle, duration 1-1.5 hours, level, suitable for prams
Admission is charged for the visit to the wildlife enclosure, no guided tour.
